WHERE AM I?

The process of creating a film is definitely long and tedious and even though I’m only creating the opening to a film. During my process I definitely feel the weight and pressure of making sure everything is perfect as if it were a full length feature film. There are a ton of aspects to consider throughout this whole experience that I would have never thought so closely about before unless I was taught it. Some of the parts of the process I may have subconsciously done in the past but I enjoy knowing that there is more to every aspect of productions than anticipated and am able to learn and practice new subjects and techniques.

Some of my good news is that I’m pretty far into production and have already begun the post-production stage. It feels almost as if I was just beginning to think about my idea for this film yesterday. I guess time really does fly by, not that it’s a bad thing for that to happen if you’re making good timing like I am. It’s been really hard to balance production alongside all of my other school work but I think I’m doing pretty well with keeping that balance.

When my crew and I were filming there were definitely some unforeseen difficulties. It had come to my attention that the dialogue I had written was not the most natural sounding for each of the actors and it made them seem more robotic. Obviously no person likes to hear any negativity about their work, I myself am one of those people, but instead of getting upset about it I thought about how I can use this criticism and learn to work on those skills I might need more help on. For this production I felt it was best if the actors just took what was written and spoke it to sound more natural to them specifically.

Some other challenges we faced when filming were during our in person shoots. The fact that people were walking into where we were very obviously filming to play basketball or take a phone call was very annoying and made it practically impossible to film what we needed at that moment. Unfortunately we were not made aware that other activities would be going on around the school campus that we were filming on but it wasn’t anything that couldn’t be avoided. Luckily all of the in-person fully casted filming we needed was all supposed to be at the same location on the same day so we just switched around the schedule so that part of the campus could be empty and available.

As I get into the editing process, I’m learning about how cautious I have to be with timing. I have tons of hours worth of footage between dialogue filming to b-roll filming and such a short amount of time to use it. I knew from the very beginning that most of my b-roll was going to be a time lapse so I’m not as concerned with that but all of my dialogue footage concerns me. I know for sure I’m not going to be able to put everything into the final cut that I wanted, but hopefully my next step when I’m complete is to make a director's cut so that way I can complete my vision and give me some peace of mind about all of the extra work me and my crew put into those cut scenes.
