From the moment I stepped into class I knew that the race had just begun. As I jumped through obstacles along the way, I grew as a filmmaker and kept my eyes on the finished line, the line that I ean across. As my journey through my production comes to a close I have no other choice than to take a deep breath, and sit here while thinking about all the hard work and loads of time that I’ve put into making everything for my production as perfect as possible. I look back to the creation of my website, the learning of different technologies, distribution practices, production techniques, and so much more and realize how much new knowledge I have gained in order to pursue my passion for film.
Towards the beginning of it all I was worried about the distance it would be until the end and all that lies before me and as I look back I realize that my worries were not as bad as the reality of it all. While it helped that I’ve taken several years of Television Production before making it to AICE Media Studies, as long as I focused and constantly worked on being better, learning each new aspect became easier and the work towards my goals felt lighter on my shoulders.
Not only has my perspective of filmmaking changed, but I look back to see how my friends, family, and teachers have supported me in this long and tedious process. My two friends and stars of my productions “The Psycho” and “Dancing With Death”, Gianna and Christian, have helped me from the very beginning of this process. It was nice to know that those two always had my back when I needed them for my productions because they understood how important it was for me to make these productions. It also was helpful that they were people I could just sit and laugh with because it made the experience less stressful and more fun. I learned from my past experiences that I need to stick with people who are 100% committed and reliable enough to not have casting issues because that was something majorly challenging that I have faced before with my attempt at a bigger production.
By working this project solo, I was able to dip my toes into the many different positions of the behind the scenes film crew line up. While it was thrilling to learn how to do each role, it was also a ton of work, a lot more than if there were multiple people working on the different positions. I had to make sure I knew what each role did and that I had the necessary skills to actually accomplish what needs to be done.
Through my studies, some new things I learned about include mise-en-scene, film distribution practices, and why companies merge or buy other companies as subsidiaries. While I began not knowing what mise-en-scene was, after I learned about it I came to the realization that I’ve used it with my productions without even realizing what it was. By understanding how films are distributed to the public, whether in a theater or on a digital streaming service, I was able to think about how I would want my production to be distributed based on public opinions, to which a survey I conducted helped me figure out what the audience would be.
As I sit here at the end of the line, finally being able to be calm and relax, I wonder “what’s next?” I may not know when or how my next race will be, but with all of this new knowledge that I’ve gained, I am ready to overcome the obstacles that will sit in my way.
