CAST AND PROPS

When creating a film, your cast and props play major roles in the final products. Making sure you have a good cast to support the project allows for the process to be easier and helps it go by a lot quicker. During the pre production process of creating my film, I knew early on who I wanted to use as my cast. Based on past experiences, I always knew that casting has been my issue when creating a production. At this point of time, it’s all about knowing the right people who are willing to put in the time and effort you need, which is why I went with my good friends Gianna and Christian.

Towards the beginning of this journey, I had done a short film to test out different techniques I had learned for filming. This production was titled “The Psycho” and also starred Gianna and Christian. While both took some convincing to get to work on that project, they ended up loving the process and final product and were all ready to help with whatever came next, even if it remained a mystery to both them and myself. Once I got an idea of what I wanted this film to be and ran it by them, they were onboard so I knew that I had my cast. Since I was running this production individually, I decided to keep the entire crew limited to us three because past experiences have proven that it’s really hard to work on projects with a large cast and crew unless you know for sure they are fully committed, and I knew that I could get that type of response with who I had already casted. Basically, I built the characters around these two people because I knew they were reliable and were willing to put in the effort that most people won’t.

It has always been a challenge for people to take these kinds of things seriously because they always think it’s just a silly school project and won’t matter if they put in minimal effort. While yes, some productions of mine have just been for school, it is much more than just a grade to me and it was important for me to find a cast that completely understands that this is what I want to do and that they have to take it seriously because a lot of things in my future could depend on this project. Both of the people in my cast understand how important this is to me and it means a lot that they were willing to help me, especially since it means I can do an activity that I’m really passionate about while still being able to have fun with my friends.

When deciding on what props were going to be used in production, I decided to use convenience over cost. There is a scene that might not make the final cut, but every prop was already in that filming location and showed exactly how the character was supposed to be viewed as a person. I took quite a bit of time to rearrange everything in this room to get it perfectly neat and all pretty and even though all that work may not be seen, I think it’s important to note that even the simple things take time to be perfect (even if all that hard time consuming work may be going down the hypothetical drain, unless it is used elsewhere). For the other scenes I had the cast bring their actual school backpacks so we wouldn't have to spend any money that wasn’t necessary to spend if we already had the materials. Everyone wore their own clothes according to described requirements, and few school materials, such as a pen and used paper, were already available to borrow and return since we were filming in a real classroom and had access to such materials thanks to our advisor that was with us through the crazy process.
