BEHIND THE SCENES OF “THE PSYCHO”

Based on past experiences, creating any type of film is not an easy task. You have to have an idea of what you want your film to look like and have the capability to execute that idea, which doesn’t always go as planned. Sometimes you may not have the resources you need to live up to the storytelling you play in your own head and things have to be changed around.

Creating my short film “The Psycho” was actually a fun experience compared to some past productions. There were some requirements that I had to consider while creating the script and while creating an idea was challenging, after I hit the “HUZZAH!” moment, I was able to put my ideas into word form. I had originally thought of making a short film about a highschool freshman that went psycho and wanted revenge on two senior girls at his school who took him under their wings just to bully him, but as circumstances were, my plans changed slightly. Luckily, my script was still a work in progress and I was easily able to change some things around.

My past productions have shown me that casting can be one of the most difficult things a production can have. I have had to deal with people not showing up, or just not being responsible enough to give me time to recast or even participate in a group production, but fortunately I did not have as much of these issues which made it a lot easier on my part. I decided to use only my closest friends for this short film and the two featured in the production turned out to be amazing and really fun to work with. While there were originally two girls in the scene, my second friend I was going to use cancelled, but luckily I had time to combine both of the girls into one character which actually made it easier on my part for filming and directing. While the freshman student I was going to use as the psycho freshman did cancel on me at the last moment, I luckily had asked another close friend of mine in advanced to join us to help for another part of production and he was happy to help fill in the position with just a slight change in role name, given that he is not a freshman.

So there we were on the day of filming. Me and my friend, Gianna, got a quick dinner at Chick-Fil-A before meeting our other friend, Christian, to begin filming and it was only fun from there. It began pouring rain while we were in the middle of filming but since we were under a cover for the most part and had umbrellas, it all worked in our favor and created a nice effect in one part of the short film.

Overall, the experience was beyond my sour expectations and I really enjoyed creating this production. Filming out of order was really weird for me to do because I typically do things chronologically, but it all turned out for the better and I’m really happy with the results and excited to create future productions.
